I just recently read sad news that several Kenyan firms are considering shutting down operations in Kenya and shifting bases to other African countries. They are blaming high power rates in Kenya as the reason. Why are neighboring countries offering lower power rates? What can we do to stop this trend?
The government takes up to 35 percent of the fuel price as revenue through taxes. The government should suspend this tax on electricity and fuel as the electricity and fuel costs in Kenya are already exceedingly high. Our electricity rates are several times higher than those in Egypt or South Africa. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I do not understand why fuel prices in Kenya would spike substantially this past year. Most of the power comes from hydroelectric power dams so this should not be affected by the world oil prices. Is the Kenya Power and Lighting Company profiting disproportionately over the world oil price issue?
Maybe we should invest more on diversifying our source of electricity. I do not think that hydroelectric dams can power Kenya alone. Why don't we try exploring nuclear energy? It seems to be a viable alternative to other electric generation facilities like coal and oil. We should preserve using oil for cars and coal is a pollution causing energy source.
