Default Salary for Leaders' Spouses

Are you in favor of paying salaries for top politicians' spouses? There is a proposal today of paying the Prime Minister's and Vice President's spouse with a monthly salary of $6,000 on top of $8,000 a month to the president's wife.

I think is outrageous that they are being paid for dubious services for the country. Their husbands are already well compensated and we have to shoulder additional salaries for them? And for what?

Having Kenyans shoulder politicians' luxurious lifestyle is absurd. Our president is already better paid than the president of the United States. Now, we have to pay more for his wife? Where is the logic in that?

Let me add that in addition to the high salaries and allowances of our top leaders, Kenya also has 40 cabinet ministers? What do they do and why do we have so many ministers for a relatively small country?

That is just crazy. The money spent on salaries, allowances and other benefits for these cabinet ministers would be better spent on schools and roads. This is a blatant example of politicians enriching themselves on the backs of ordinary Kenyans.

For what, what elective office do they hold to deserve that pay?

What are there job responsibilities and description that warrant a $ 6,000 salary.

This is just outrageous and it goes a long way to tarnish our image around the world about our incompetence to govern ourselves.

They are being paid to showcase Kenya's family values. They have to go to functions all the time and cut all those ribbons and meet with a lot of people all year round. The British pays and subsidizes the royal family millions just to fill these same functions.

I think the comparison with Brits are way off the line Kofi. The royal family and their residences and palaces are a major tourist draw for the United Kingdom. That country is also one of the richest in the world while Kenya is still a third world country facing a lot of problems.
