Default Alternative to the Gym

Do you think a better alternative to working out inside a boring gym is to engage in a fun sports activity that would interest you? Getting in shape is not about how miserable you can make yourself because getting healthy and fit should really be fun.

A friend of mine stopped going to the gym and enrolled in a dance class and lost a lot of pounds that way. Another friend ditched his gym and car and goes around in his bike and saved the environment from CO2s, saved gas and got rid of excess fats easily.

Your are right on Abasi. I used to work out and I had a very bad time motivating myself to go to the gym to work out regularly. I ended up enrolling in a boxing class and I had a fun time working out and keeping myself fit and trim. Plus I learned a thing or two on boxing. While I will never be a professional boxer, I can use the skills that I learn when I get stuck in a bad situation.

I do not know if I would call having your head bashed in boxing as fun. However, there are other sports that can give you better enjoyment like football. Me and my friends spend weekends playing the game and it has kept me fit and trim so far.

I know martial arts is a good alternative to going to the gym everyday. Martial arts are particularly good as they burn up a lot of calories, while at the same time improving all round fitness as a complete form of exercise.

As Darweshi mentioned earlier, you can learn a thing or two in martial arts or boxing that you may need in real life. What if there is a mugger following you at night? Would you lift barbells to scare him away?

Try mountain biking. It will surely make you sweat, and also burns some calories. Every sunday we bike maybe 5 - 10 kilometers back and fourth. It really is hard but after months of biking you will surely love it. Just to add up if you love exploring nature this sport is for you.

Mountain biking is a great idea Calvindale. However, you can take it a step further. I already left my car at home and take my bike to work everyday. You get all sweaty and stuff but this exercise will also save you gas. Obviously, you need to have a shower available in the office so this may not be viable alternative for most people...

My house is about 5 kilometres from my office so I decided to one day walk to work and it has paid dividends. I used to have back pains and suffered from athritis on my previously broken ankle. However, since starting with my daily regimen, all of my maladies disappeared and never came back. I am still overweight but I am happy with my physical condition now.

Thumbs up

There are a lot of truly more fun alternatives to the gym as I have read your enthusiastic response to my post. Best of all, some of these does away with the high gym membership costs gyms entail. Thanks for the ideas guys.

I have paid for a Gym membership twice, not once. Twice I coughed my hard earned cash in the name of going to the gym but I must tell you all that on each occasion by the third week I'm out and gone. It boring too me - you know, doing all those exercises indoors...Me I love the out door world.

I think after I get married and with kids and approaching 50's then I can think of boxing. Right now I don't want to get myself into a situation where I would be smiling to my fiancee with one teeth off. No punches to my face...Please!

I have taken a few martial classes, its fun. That is something I'd love to do. Running outside is something I do, mountain biking is excellent too but seriously I don't see myself reporting to office half sweating after that bikes' ride.

I find playing football an all round training exercise and a good alternative to paying those monthly recurring Gym fee for a service that I hardly use. Well those are just my thoughts.
