    Default Conjugal Rights for Prisoners

Inmates have not yet gotten a chance to enjoy their conjugal rights.

Hopes are that this will come to be if Members of Parliament will adopt a recent task force report over the conjugal visits for the prisoners.

The fact that they are retained as prisoners and deprived of the right to freedom does not prevent them from enjoying other rights as such. Let the married get their conjugal rights (something like once per month won't sound bad). They have feelings as well and there is a possibility of their free spouses to indulge in extramarital affairs to curb the emotions and the risk of STIs and bastard children may be on the rise. We hope the issue will be looked into as soon as possible.

But this is what is in the power of the stake holders and should implement it, as it will help serve prisoners to enjoy their marital rights.

As far as l am concerned they are only deprived of their freedom, they should be left to enjoy their other rights. they are human beings and so the urge to have their conjugal rights should be respected.

To many, it might seem out of place but conjugal rights are very vital. A section should be included in the constitution that will allow women and men to enjoy their conjugal rights while in prison. The reason for this: To reduce the HIV infection rate, carnal knowledge and lesbianism, which will jeopardize the health of prisoners.

Sex in prisons should be sanctioned. Sexual frustration affects prisoners. No doubt there are many prisoners who will trade sexual services for drugs, and then become addicts. There are also stories of prisoners engaging in homosexual relationships. It is common in our jails. For those who are locked up for a long time, the situation is stickier. They have no opportunity to become parents or have the number of children they want. Some men resort to raping others, and that has deep psychological repercussion. Prisoners’ partners (both men and women) apart from having a lot in their plate to deal with such as loneliness, social stigma and at times poverty, also suffer from sexual frustration.

Some countries in Europe have already begun offering prisoners conjugal rights. May be it’s high time other countries took a leaf on this.
