Default Genesis 28-29 (Jacob and Laban's Daughters)

When Jacob’s time to marry Rachel came he was given Leah instead even after working as a servant for seven years that he had to extend some more seven years to marry Rachel? Is it that the bible supports polygamy?

It is not a matter of polygamy but it is about customary practices, an elder girl is supposed to be married before the younger one so Laban had to implement it. It also a good lesson of hardworking and being patient. Laban worked 14 years to get Rachael, how many years have you worked to get Christ?

Default Poligamy In The Old Testament

The fact that Jacob married Leah and her sister Rachel does not show that polygamy was a recommended issue but rather shows the extent to which traditions were followed to the rather. Rachel being the second born could not be married first before her elder sister Leah and hence the reason why Laban had to disguise Leah. Because Jacob loved Rachel instead, he had to work for seven more years and at the end of it all he married the two sisters.

    Lessons Learnt.

Jacob was patient to work for fourteen years in order to get Rachel one should not give up in case what he/she wants is not yet here.
Jacob’s devotion shows the spirit of hard work hence Christians should learn that even salvation is not easily and cheaply gotten but after a struggle and commitment.

Also from the creation story in Genesis 1:27, God created one man and one woman hence marriage should be monogamous.
Therefore God never intended for His people to be polygamous.
