I feel that long distance relation is difficult to maintain because there are so many tensions and difficulties a person faces that he/she tends to become selfish to a certain extent and that is what makes a relation sour.If one tries to understand the other person's problems and is truly romantic then only it is possible to have long distance relationship.
Just keep the communication running try to call each other twice or once a day, keep in mind that there are a lot of ways to communicate. Well good luck for the both of you.
