I have a friend who owns a business providing security guards for small businesses and he says that it is really lucrative. You just function like an agency to assign security guards for businesses that needs them and you get a fat profit margin.

He was a former police officer who knew how to process permits for the business, plus gun permits and others. I think this is a type of business that needs just a small capital and offer a high return on investment.

All these local business ideas are great. But if you want to strike it rich, I think the export market is a great path to do business. Why don't you explore a business exporting African handicrafts abroad. These costs only a few dollars to make but would cost a lot of money in Europe or the Americas. I have relatives who are into exporting furniture and now are really rich.

I am a tea lover and I always wanted to open a tea shop in Nairobi. I would serve hot tea and iced tea, and offer a variety of choices from green tea from China to red tea from South Africa. I wonder if there is a market for this like coffee shops seem to always have. I would then expand my tea shops across the globe and compete with Starbucks in size and popularity.

I see most guys here are talking with regard and within the context of the "Kenyan boundaries" Another aspect you may want to look into is the idea of doing business from within Kenya but targeting international customers.

Now you may ask me how you can do this and I must tell you that might be lead to another long discussion. Actually I would be glad to do that at the appointed time - soon. For now there is a free course about

that you can take that will expound more on what I'm talking about.

With the Internet more business opportunities that transcend country boundary lines are now possible and I'm afraid, once again, most of us are going to be left behind just like during the industrialization era. The Asians are really into no wonder their nations are doing pretty well in terms of trade and development. So as we discuss this topic with regard to starting a business in Kenya, let us also look into other possibilities...

Yes I totally agree with your points. Having the ideas for your new business is something, but choosing the “right one” is really important. You really have to investigate about the business that you want to jump on.
